As we get older and through drinking dark liquids such as red wine, coke, and coffee our teeth can become stained. Smoking also contributes to this problem which looks unattractive. There is a solution in the form of teeth whitening. There are many different products and agents offering this service but long lasting whitening teeth is safer with dentists.
When using this treatment a dentist knows how we will react to the chemicals and this is one of the more obvious reason to have a dentist perform the treatment. Believing that the procedure is totally harmless in all cases does not make sense as patients could have a medical condition or be allergic to chemicals found in the products.
A dentists studies can last up to eight years before being able to put that plaque on the wall. Their primary concern its to maintain our gums and teeth and keep them healthy. They also learn how our bodies could respond to all procedures and with regards to this subject how we could react to the chemicals in bleaching agents. Post whitening a dentist will give us a medical screening.
This medical screening will simply involve taking a medical background check and ask if the patient has any allergies. A dental history check and inspection of the gums and teeth for signs of infection or weaknesses, maybe an x-ray will be performed if the dentist decides it is necessary. The reason this screening is performed is to reduce the potential hazards for the patient. It is most advisable to have these checks performed even if using a self whitening kit.
There are a few side effects and injuries that have been known to occur using this treatment. Chemical burns occur when high concentrations of the oxidising agent come in contact with the gums. These burns happen most often at home with over the counter kits. Over bleaching happens when administering to much bleach in a short time period wearing away protective enamel and badly discoloring teeth. Mild and temporary increase in sensitivity and irritation have also been found in patients.
The most effective and commonly used treatments to whiten ones teeth is a gel based bleach. They come in low concentration doses sold over the counter and used at home mostly, and high concentration doses which can also be bought over the counter but more commonly performed by by a dentist. The reason why high concentration doses should be performed by a dentist is that the procedure is higher risk than others but has better results.
When utilizing the high concentration gel bleach a patient can expect beautiful white teeth that will last many months. It is cheaper to buy the product and use it at home but it is much riskier to do so. Chemical burns to the gums are a real danger and the protection trays provided with the self apply kit are sometimes used incorrectly or not completely cover the gums.
Their are many other products and services on the market that claim to whiten ones teeth, but results can be very short or non existent in some cases so be sure to do research before trying. Using a gel based bleach is the best solution and long lasting whitening teeth is safer with dentists.
